session 10

final project

Option 1: Create a Presentation

Explain how you produced the presentation.

I created a power point presentation because I think this power point presentation will help students to understand the goal of the course specially the course will be totally online.
I created my presentation by using power point program and I add text and description pictures to be clearer for the student to understand the text. Also I add music to make it enjoyable to the students. Finally, I record the power point as .mov video.
When I created my power point I was very careful about the colors, font and I try to design every thing well. First I chose a nice slide theme that has a nice background. I chose clear and dark colors, I try to chose good font and big enough to make students read it. In the end I record the power point and I was very careful about the timing for each slide in the power point. I record it not too fast so the students can read it and understand it; on the other hand it was not too slow so the students feel Bored.

Explain why you chose the technology you used.

I chose to use a video power point presentation because this technology is very helpful for the student because of the following:
• Students can understand the object by seeing the video power point presentation that have text and description pictures.
• Students can play the video power point presentation any time and anywhere and they can also replay it more and more to make them understand what they may miss it from the first time play it.
• Students can easily engage with the video power point presentation that includes a text and pictures more than the podcast that has an audio only.
And To be honest with you I just learn that how I can create the video that include power point slide and music. I am very happy because I learn some thing that I was wishing to know how to make it.

Discuss the characteristics of the technology in terms of one vs. two-way communication, media richness/social presence etc.

The video power point presentation is a great type for one-way communication. Students can connect with the text and description pictures more simply with the technology than to a podcast. The technology has become indispensible part in our lives. In last few years ago, online courses are more conmen used in colleges. There are a lot of students like to take online classes. This kind of technology (video power point presentation) can help them by download the video in their handhelds and play it at anytime at any place.

Explain what steps were taken to ensure ADA compliance.

The step that I taken to ensure ADA compliance, I created a word document that has my text in the video power point presentation so the students can read the word document when they have problem to open the video.

session 9

Session 9:
Maintaining Motivation and Engagement

In this online class Dr. Newberry started with explain the final project and the three options for the final project and give us some tools that we can use it such au video, PowerPoint. Also he focus in this question:
Why we choose the technology that we want to choose it?
There are some student whom asked the dr. about their idea for the final project.

Also dr. Newberry talk about the technologies and methods that he uses to motivate and engage students in an online class. He gives us good point that we (us the instructors) can engage students in an online class:

• Instructor should use a good ways to communicate with students for example: Dr Newberry is a good example for a good instructor who communicate fast with his student, he check his email and give a clear evaluate and send the email back to his student. I like when he send email to students he write every student name, and the old assignment grades.

• Instructor should give a clear topic to students to make his expectations.

• Instructor should use timely feedback that makes the student engage and motivate.

• Instructor should use a smaller assignments that focuses on the subject, this kind of assignment make student engage and motivate, also learn the subject.

The dr. also talks about some students whom like the online classes more than face to face classes. Also their interaction in online classes is more than face-to-face.
I like the online classes more than face to face and also my interaction in online class is beater then face-to-face class. Also I feel more comfortable because the English language is my second language.

Dr new berry focuses on the three communications that can make us learn more a bout the subject and learn from each other.

* First, the email of the instructor is not hyper linked.

* Second, some of the colors that were used in the table too light and it was difficult to read. For example: the yellow color was hard to me to read it.

* Third, the table format wasn’t organized well for example; In the Media and Links table, only the video was in medal and the rest was in the right.

* Forth, the paragraph of the information part was not possible to read it because of the color, and be honest, it was terrible.

* Fifth, there are no descriptive links for the video and the audio”

Explain How to Correct These Problems:

* first, I like to hyper link the email address.

* Second, I will using dark and clear color such as; red, green, dark orange, dark purple and blue.

* Third, the table should be organized.

* Forth, I would like to use the same good quality of the video and audio but I will put more than one or add more links.

*Fifth, the paragraph of the information part, I would like to put it with out box and use dark color for example dark blue or black.

* Sixth, add descriptive names to the video and audio links.

session 5

New media

A new media is the term that use to discussion of the new technologies active program and it is include the appearance of digital, programmed, or networked information and communication technologies.
Also the new media: online and digital ways of receiving information (link). New media can include: Blog, mobile devices, Podcast, Wiki, Facebook, Youtube/Teachertube.

A blog
(a contraction of the term "web log")[1] is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order.” LINK
I like the blog because I can Design my blog and select a template that I like it; also I can chose my favorite colors. People who visit my blog can read some of information about me that I added it For example: my name, my interesting, and my photo.
Also they can contact me by my email.

Mobile devices:
This is a new media that I really enjoyed to use it. I learned a lot of new things about the uses of the mobile devices in ETEC 676 last summer. There are different types of mobile devices such as, cell phone, net books, handheld computers, and more. Teachers and students use handheld devices as tools in schools. This makes learning easier for example; teachers can communicate with students anytime and anywhere by using texting, emailing, and chatting. Moreover, I can use my iphone to do a lot of things too. For example: Talking & Text-messaging with my family and my friends over seas. Checking my email and my blog. Some time I buy some thing for my husband and my daughter through my Iphone with out need to go the malls "

On the other hand, the old Media: generally used to describe newspapers, television and radio and other forms of receiving information (link). The old media can include: Television, film, written items such us; books, magazines and newspapers.

In old media the listener and the speaker cant inter active like the new media people can add thier comment in effective or bad way to the different blogs or wibsaits.

Before I came to USA, I just have facebook. Now I do have a website and blog since I started my master degree in Instructional Technology in CSUSB, I learned a lot of new things especially “new media” such as website, blog, Podcast.

session 4

Forth Assignment

1. Our text categorizes electronic information into four types:
Textual Information
Presentation Graphics Slide Show
Spreadsheets and Databases
Multimedia objects
Provide an example or multiple examples of effective use of each type of electronic information for eLearning. Be sure to provide specific information about what makes your indicated use “effective”. Explaining effectiveness in light of one of the media theories as presented in this session (or another media theory you prefer) is expected.

Textual Information:
Textual information the good example for Textual is a course syllabus. Syllabus can include the reference. This kind of electronic information ranks relatively low on the Media Richness scale.

Presentation Graphics Slide Show:
In textual information we can be viewed on computer monitor or print form. It will be interviewed in computer screen and must be designed accordingly. For example: to make my power point slide show effective I will designed it accordingly and make sure the color is not too light or too small. Also when I use pictures in my power point I should use clear picture and related to the topic. Some time I use the sound in my power point to attract my student attention. Slide shows would not change too much from textual information that refer to the media richness.

Spreadsheets and Databases:
Spreadsheets and Databases provide two common ways of representing data. Also allows posting data in a calendar. For example: excel program, I will use excel program in my online classes to put my student grades this program will help me to organization of student grades.

Multimedia objects:
To describe e learning resources that consists primarily of still picture, movies picture and sound. For example when we create a video I should use a good quality video that has good sound and clear image to attract my student attention.00, of using one way communication in an e-learning environment. It has the greatest ability to transmit facial expression and body language when compared to other modes of one-way communication.I think that the video lectures are the richest way, as what the media richness theory concerned. In the video lectures we using one way communication

2. Our text goes into some very specific detail on the proper formatting of textual information. Explain what you believe to be the most important guidelines for your use of textual information that are provided in the text and then create a sample text document (other than an announcement) that demonstrates the best practices of formatting textual information. Be sure to explain the purpose of the document and who the intended users are if that isn’t obvious from the document itself.
Standard file format is the most important guideline for textual information, when we adopt stander file formats we should make sure that all students will be able to open and view the document. Also the document should be easy to understand. Students must have access to the software that handles such formats. For example the Schedule that Dr Newberry provides it in the backboard.

3. What is the difference between synchronous and asynchronous communication as it is used in eLearning and how do you choose between the two for a given task?
Synchronous activity such as a videoconferences or a conference telephone paper letters its hold face-to-face meeting.
Synchronous communication is conducted on all students give their answers in same time for example: takeshoe, skype.

Asynchronous forms of discussion require expensive equipment or alternately consumed much time in the exchange paper document.
The communication is conducted on an individual.
Asynchronous communication is conducted on an individual, students in this communication have to post their answers and comments any time in one week for example: blogs, websait.

4. What technologies does your CMS/LMS have to support synchronous communication?
LMS support the chat in electronic discussion on a pacific topic.
Chat: student and instructor can accesses to the chat program and discuss the week’s session, Student who missed the class can replay the lecture recorded. For example: takeshoe program
5. What technologies does your CMS/LMS have to support asynchronous communication?
LMS support the blog in electronic discussion.
Blog: students have to create their own blog and post their assignments and make comments to their classmates.

6. Describe a task or assignment you could use in an online class that would use either asynchronous or synchronous communication. Explain the task or assignment, identify the technology you would use to support the activity and explain why you chose that technology. Explain what you would do to ensure that the activity was successful.
In the online course I will teach them how to create a blog. In the first and second class I will ask them to create their own blogs to post their assignment in it. They can find the steps in my syllabus. Also I will post some recommend blogs in “my website”.Each student must post their assignment every week and also they should but same thing he/she like to share with another students, that not related to the subject “that make student be more active in their blogs “
In the first class I will use my website to post the class information for example:* some recommended links to blogs.* Video explaining to the students how they can create a blog.* Assignment deadlines.
In the second class each student will select a template that will conduct them information. Also they should write some information about themselves, For example: name, interesting. They should but how we can contact them, for example: email. They need to post their assignment before the due date. They need to post comments to their classmates.“Students need to read each other’s posts and comment on them.”

session 3

Dr. Jim Monaghan, Director - Office of Online and Distributed Learning, CSUSB.

The interview topic was about “Institutional Support for eLearning at CSUSB”. It was interesting to me and I enjoyed it. There are many things that I wasn’t known about it before this interview.
Dr. Jim talked about what the Office of Online and Distributed Learning, CSUSB do, also he discussed many things with us that I summarized in points:

*The Office of Online and Distributed Learning (ODL) at CSUSB support education to be more tenable.
*Office of Online and Distributed Learning, CSUSB try to have more courses and program available. Also focus on videoconference.
*The instructors of CSUSB support student learning and develop their skills by using many different technologies.
*Office of Online and Distributed Learning, CSUSB support for faculty and try to make them uses online learning.
*Dr Newberry talked about the leadership support online camps office. And he asked Dr Jim several question about the office of Online and Distributed Learning.
*The CSUSB has a unique strategic planning to support online programs.
*The vision of e learning classes.
*How the faculty members know how to deal with this kind of online program.
*The Objective of online tools and the budget of online courses.
*Online courses better than face to face courses.
*Dr Jim talked about blackboard, audio, video, and podcast.

In this interview I learned many things about Office of Online and Distributed Learning at CSUSB, I like how the office supports teachers. Dr New berry use a lot of good question that make us understands the job of this office and make this interview interesting. This interview was broadcasted with talkshoe program. This program was recording the interview online live conversions. Also this program used chatting and discussion. I like this program because I can replay the interview that helps me to understand it more and more as I replay it.

session 2

Focus Questions for Chapter 1 and 4 (Waterhouse, S. A. The power of eLearning) and CMS/LMS Investigation

1. Central to our investigation of eLearning Technologies and Methods is gaining an understanding of Learning Management Systems (LMS) sometimes also called Course Management System (CMS) software. Chapter 1 of our text discusses the functionality of typical LMS/CMS, identifying four major categories. What are those categories?
The four major LMS functional categories support:
1-Distribution of course information.
2-Student-instructor and student-student communications.
3-Student interaction with course resources.
4-Online testing and grading.
(Page8)

2. What LMS/CMS software do you currently use or plan to use? Explain what you know about your system's functionality in each of the four areas identified by the book. (If you don't have access to LMS/CMS software just use Blackboard for your discussion in this area.
I do not have class to use any LMS/CMS software, because I did not teach before, but I plan to use the first major category that is “Distribution of course information”
I like the practical ways to use Distribution of course information such as:
Use the course syllabus, course notes, and slide show presentations for previewing or reviewing course topics, course documents, assignments, materials and student portfolios. (Page9).
Because I don’t have access to LMS/CMS software I will discuss my experience with blackboard. In Saudi Arabia we don’t use this kind of system, at the first class the instructor introduce his/her self and explain the class and show the student the book in this class and where their can bay it. After that start the lecture. In the end of every class the instructor write the homework on the board. This is simply what was going on in most of the universities classes in Saudi Arabia. When I took my first class in USA especially in CSUSB I don’t know that there was tool called “Blackboard” I didn’t do my first homework, I thought there is no homework because the instructor didn’t ask us to do it in the end of the class. After what happened I discovered that Cal State San Bernardino uses a program called "Blackboard." Every student have to log into one's own blackboard account to moniter assignments, watch grades, and even complete assignments I like this way because Blackboard allow me to access my class materials, assignments and grades any time of the day. Also I can add and drop classes, see the list of courses in which I am currently enrolled just by using my computer. Every instructor posts a Syllabus, Schedule, some of videos or links that will help student in the course also the assignment and project that should student don before the deadline also you can view the instructor office hours and email.
I took ETEC 500 class with Dr Newberry and we used Blackboard's Discussion Board and Chat. There were equations every week about the textbook that we use it in this class. Students should post their answers before the deadline on a Sunday night. Each student can view another student's answers and learn through the communication with different opinions with their own.

3. Chapter 1 of our text identifies six steps for getting started with eLearning. Discuss each step and use each step as a springboard for discussing what you want to do with eLearning either now or in the future.
There are six steps for getting stared with elearning:
1-Ask yourself why.
2-Make a commitment.
3-Develop a new vision for your course and how you teach.
4-Determine the resources available to you.
5-Acquire new technology skills and develop new instructional methods.
6-Plan.

the first step: Ask yourself why
It is important to know why I chose E learning especially it is a new technology and its not widely used in Saudi Arabia (my country). E learning make learning more easy and more enjoy.
I chose this kind of technology in education because I believe it will be heavily used in the future. Also E learning makes the learning easier for example; teachers can communicate with students anytime and anywhere by using texting, emailing, and chatting. Students can share their information all over the world Moreover the E learning makes the learning more interactive, more enjoyable, and successful.
second step: Make a commitment
I should be flexible with my tools and change it according to any circumstances that may appear in my class.
third step: Develop a new vision for your course and how you teach
I will be always follow up on all new in the world of technology and I will try to get to know how to use the new technology in my class to improve my student skills.
My goal in the end of my course is to improve my student skill and make the relearning easy and exciting also successful. I will ask them after every course how they like this class and what the problem that may face it and try to change my way if that can help my students to be successful.

forth step: Determine the resources available to you
We have to evaluate our resources that we use it in our course such as software, hardware Teaching support and E learning expertise.
fifth step: Acquire new technology skills and develop new instructional methods
The instructor who teaches E laerning should be able to using the tools and improve his student skills.
sixth step: Plan
The important thing when you want to teach is the plan. The good plan should save time. I should do my plan before I start my class. My plan include the goal of this class, the way that I will use it in this class and more. Also the plan should depend on instructional goals, my skills, it save the time we have available in my course, the technology tools existing to use and the support that district can provide it to me.

4. Chapter 4 of our text discusses the functionality of specific LMS/CMS tools in terms of being for one-way communication, two-way communication or for organization. Explain the key differences between one-way and two-way communication and identify the tools your LMS/CMS provides for each type of communication.
One-way communication:
Involves sending massages without provisions for receiving a reply.
Posting information to the course site for students to view at their convenience.

Two-way communication:
Involves sending messages and receiving replies to them.
Students interact with their instructor or with each other.
Discussions are the most common from of two-way communication using an LMS.
Tools supporting One-way communication:
Announcements and documents created using the LMS.
Files created using other software
Grade books
Email
Calenders
Homepages
External links

Tools supporting Two-way communication:
Discussions
Whiteboards
Online test
Private storage space

First Assignment

Introduction:

Hello everyone :)
My name is Eman Aldhafiri, I am from Saudi Arabia. I did not have a job in the past, because after I graduated with my Bachelor in Saudi Arabia I came to USA to get my master in instructional technology, which I am very interested in this field.
My goal in this class to learning new skills and learn how to be able to teach an online class in my country.
I took 3 online classes so far, and I like it more than face-to-face classes.
I learned a lot of new skills, For example: In ETEC 500: I learned how to create website, Photoshop pictures, and more.
In the first ETEC 676: I learned how to create a blog in the first and how to use mobile devices in education and Advantages and Disadvantages of using mobile devices as a tool in education.
I n the second ETEC 676: I learned how to planning for my online class and test the tools that I have it in my inline classes, It was not easy at first to create an online class because develop online learning content is new things I never deal with this kind of technology before but now I can do it and I feel comfortable with it.
In ETEC 543: this class was the harder one. I learned how to do research plan and use interview, Statistics, and Tables. I never deal with this kind of research before this class.
In online classes the communication depend on E-mail, video and sharing learning between teachers and student. “I like this way”
Online classes are make learning more interesting. This technology gives a chance to all people in the world to take their education certificate. I like to be a good teacher that uses technology in her class to make her student active in her class.
